Humaira Ghilzai

Humaira Ghilzai is a cultural advocate for the Afghan people and Afghanistan. Born and raised in Kabul in a diplomatic family, she and her family fled Afghanistan after the Russian invasion in 1979. Ms. Ghilzai was the cultural consultant for the production of The Kite Runner at San Jose Repertory Theatre and Arizona Theatre Company. She serves as co-founder and Chair of The Board of Directors of Afghan Friends Network, where she has spearheaded many educational programs to improve education for women and girls in Afghanistan, particularly Ghazni. Ms. Ghilzai founded the Sister City program between Hayward, Calif., and Ghazni, Afghanistan. Ms. Ghilzai lectures about Afghanistan, its people and women’s issues. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children.
