Costume Apprentice


Apprenticeship Description

The Costume Apprentice will work within the Costume Department in order to learn about the many aspects of costuming for live theater. The focus of this apprenticeship is in building the technical skills needed to make early-career costumes professionals suitable for work in regional theatre. These skills are developed through a devised curriculum between costume technicians, wardrobe staff, wig and makeup artists and resident design assistants all under the supervision of the Costume Director. Some design opportunities are available throughout the season as assigned by the Costume Director. 

Ideal for individuals with a desire to grow a deeper understanding of professional costuming practices and skills in a regional theater’s Costume Department.  

Learning Goals 

  • Develop the skills to be a confident costume technician 
  • Strengthen the abilities to use tools and equipment common to costume workrooms 
  • Gain an understanding of various costume staff member’s role and significance in the design process 
  • Foster the ability to read a sketch or research, and translate a design into a completed garment 
  • Develop skills in pattern creation through draping or flat patterning 
  • Learn the necessary skills to work alongside wardrobe team members 
  • Broaden skills that aid an effective design process  
  • Learn how to market yourself as a theatre professional and present your work in resumes and portfolios 

 

 Learning Strategies 

  • Learn applicable costuming skills within the Actors Theatre of Louisville Costume Department, which is composed of staff costume technicians, design assistants, wardrobe team members, and wig artists
  • Complete an independent costume construction project to better understand the costume design and construction process from conceptualization through realization 
  • Run a show track and assist with pre and post show duties as assigned 
  • Help facilitate the design process by supporting staff Costume Design Assistants on select Humana Festival projects as assigned 
  • Serve as the Costume Designer or Coordinator for selected Professional Training Company projects 
  • Attend periodic workshops and seminars  

 

Ideal candidates should possess 

  • Prior experience in costume, or garment, construction and design
  • A willingness to learn about the many facets of costuming
  • Be a highly motivated, proactive self-starter, with the ability to work in and foster a team-focused environment
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced organization, with a variety of personalities, while possibly balancing the needs of several projects
  • Strong communication skills

SCHEDULE 

The Costume Apprentice will primarily work Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 6pm. However, with the opportunities to work alongside staff Design Assistants, learn from Wardrobe Team members, and also design select PTC productions during the season, the flexibility to be available for evenings, Sundays, or Mondays is helpful.
