Costume Apprentice


Summary of Position

The Costume Apprentice assists the Costume Shop and some guest Costume Designers will all aspects of costume design, construction, and execution. The ideal candidate has a background and passion for theatrical costumes with a desire to grow a deeper understanding of professional practice. Please note that while some design opportunities exit, this is primarily a technical apprenticeship.

Responsibilities

    • Work within a 15-member Costume Department, helping to ensure successful design processes and performances for the Actors Theatre of Louisville Mainstage Season, Holiday Series, and Humana Festival productions.
    • Complete an independent construction project, under the guidance of various department staff members, wherein the apprentice will research, design, and build an outfit to better understand the process from conceptualization to realization of a finished garment or outfit.
    • Help facilitate the design process by supporting staff Costume Design Assistants on certain projects as assigned by the Costume Director.
    • Under the supervision of the Wardrobe Manager, run a show track and assist with pre and post show duties as assigned, alongside staff Wardrobe team members.
    • Act as the Costume Designer or Coordinator for certain Professional Training Company projects as assigned by the Costume Director.

Primary learning goals

    • Function as an essential team member in a major regional theatre’s Costume Department.
    • Familiarize oneself with each costume staff member’s role- and their importance- in the design process.
    • Develop the skills to use tools and equipment common to costume workrooms.
    • Foster the ability to read a sketch or research, and translate a design into a completed garment.
    • Work towards the ability to create pattern pieces through draping or flat patterning.
    • Learn necessary skills to work alongside wardrobe team members, and understand how their work with actors is vital throughout performances.
    • Improve communication tools in the costume design and construction process.
    • Broaden skills that aid an effective design process by working on selected Professional Training Company projects.
    • Assemble the beginnings of a portfolio and/or resume for future use.

Qualifications

    • The ability to work in a fast-paced organization, with a variety of personalities, while possibly balancing the needs of several projects.
    • Prior experience in costume construction and design.
    • Visual documentation of past costume construction and design work.
    • Be a highly motivated, proactive self-starter, with the ability to work in and foster a team-focused environment.
    • Strong communication skills.

Education

Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Professional Training Company is focused on practical, experiential training designed to help young theatre professional’s transition from an academic degree to a real-world career. While completion of a four-year degree is preferred, professional work experience in theatre or related fields may meet apprenticeship requirements. Successful candidates enter into the apprenticeship already having acquired basic training and experience in the field and are looking for immersive career development opportunities.

Compensation

A grant of $5,000 is awarded to each full-season apprentice to help defray the cost of living.  We also provide each apprentice with help finding low-cost housing and securing student loan deferral for the season. Apprentices are responsible for all costs associated with living in Louisville for the duration of the apprenticeship. It is possible for the Communications Apprentice to obtain part-time employment outside the Apprenticeship. Additional employment must be approved by the Marketing Director in advance.
