Development Apprentice


Apprenticeship Description

By building relationships with individuals, corporations, foundations, government agencies and a variety of community partners, Actors Theatre’s Development team raises $4.5 million annually to support the theatre’s operations and programs. The Development Apprentice is considered a crucial member of the team and gains direct experience in all aspects of fundraising. The Development Apprentice reports to the Director of Individual Giving, but works with all members of the team on numerous projects in support of the Development Department’s revenue goals and strategic objectives.  

Ideal for candidates with interest and/or experience in fundraising, special events planning/management, project management and fostering relationships between communities and arts organizations  

 

Alumni Include Development Apprentices have gone on to full-time work with noteworthy arts and cultural organizations in positions such as Development Coordinator, Development Associate, Development Manager, Membership Manager, and Research Associate. 

 

Learning Goals 

  • Gain an understanding of the duties and flow of activities within a Development department and its role within a nonprofit regional theatre company 
  • Gain proficiency in nonprofit arts fundraising principles and practices  
  • Master the donor lifecycle, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship 

 

Learning Strategies include

  • Working alongside Development staff members, participate in department activities including weekly team meetings, planning sessions, prospect discussions, and events  
  • Support the work of the Development team by assisting with database management and reporting, annual fund activities, prospect research, Board engagement, and institutional funding initiatives 
  • Plan and execute the Professional Training Company’sApprentice Showcase Campaign, a six-month fundraising initiative with a goal of ~$20,000 
  • Manage the process of securing and tracking items for a silent auction, working closely with the Silent Auction Committee, as part of our anchor fundraising event, Lobster Feast 
  • Craft donor engagement materials 
  • Create and maintain customer relationship management (CRM) databases  
  • Assisting with grant proposals and research funding prospects 

 

Ideal candidates should possess

  • Warm and friendly disposition
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in an often fast-paced environment 
  • Flexibility to respond to the needs of various collaborators and rapidly shifting priorities. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Experience with CRM databases, preferably Tessitura or Raiser’s Edge  
  • It is preferable, but not required, for candidates to have a reliable source of transportation for getting around town for events and other duties as assigned
