Development Apprentice

Summary of Position

The Development Apprentice works with and assists the Development Department in all aspects of cultivating and stewarding individual, corporate, foundation, and government partners and donors as we raise $5 million to support the theatre’s operations, during this nine-month intensive training program. The Development apprentice will gain first-hand experience in all aspects of fundraising, from crafting direct mail appeals and tracking data to researching funding prospects and planning for our annual fundraiser which attracts more than 750 guests.


  • Lead the creative and logistical elements of the Actors Theatre Apprentice Company’s Showcase Fundraising Campaign.
  • Assist the silent auction committee of Lobster Feast, our major fundraising event, with solicitation and tracking of items to be auctioned during the event.
  • Participate and contribute to discussions involving donor cultivation and appreciation events, assist with taking RSVPs, and work the events with the Development Department.
  • Assist with research of information and collection of materials for proposals and/or reports for donors.
  • Maintain confidential donor information as needed in database and hard files.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Primary learning goals

  • Gain an understanding of the duties and flow of activities within a Development Department, including management of interaction with donors and prospects.
  • Learn the basic components of a Donor Database/Customer Relationship Management software and how to generate reports.
  • Learn how to steward current donors and cultivate new donors.
  • Learn how to research prospects while honing writing and analytical skills related to grant applications, individual donor communications, and/or corporate proposals.
  • Learn to be a Brand Ambassador for the theatre.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with strong computer literacy.
  • It is preferred, but not required, for candidates to have a reliable source of transportation for getting around town for events and other duties as assigned. (Mileage reimbursement may be available for certain assignments.)


Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Professional Training Company is focused on practical, experiential training designed to help young theatre professional’s transition from an academic degree to a real-world career. While completion of a four year degree is preferred, professional work experience in theatre or related fields may meet apprenticeship requirements. Successful candidates enter into the apprenticeship already having acquired basic training and experience in the field and are looking for immersive career development opportunities.


A grant of $5,000 is awarded to each full-season apprentice to help defray the cost of living.  We also provide each apprentice with help finding low-cost housing and securing student loan deferral for the season. Apprentices are responsible for all costs associated with living in Louisville for the duration of the apprenticeship. It is possible for the Development Apprentice to obtain part-time employment outside the apprenticeship. Additional employment must be approved by their supervisor in advance.
