Directing Apprentice


Summary of position

Directing apprentices will work directly with and receive mentorship and training from Artistic Director Les Waters and Associate Artistic Director Meredith McDonough. Additionally, apprentices will observe some of the finest directors in the country while assisting on mainstage shows, including for the Humana Festival of New American Plays. Apprentices are also guaranteed several directing opportunities (including new play workshops, solo performance pieces, and ten-minute plays) with the Professional Training Company. Note that this apprenticeship is equal parts observation and directing.

Responsibilities

  • Assistant Direct three or more mainstage productions.
  • Assistant Direct at least one Humana Festival production.
  • Serve as a resident director for the Professional training Company season including directing for the Solo Mios (written and performed by the Acting Apprentices), New Play Projects (pieces commissioned from playwrights for small groups of Acting Apprentices), the PTC Tens (a bill of ten-minute plays), and the New Voices Young Playwrights Festival.
  • Opportunities to direct independent projects.
  • Assist in the script selection process for the PTC Tens and New Voices.

Primary learning goals

  • Be able to articulate the processes of a variety of directors and styles while developing a unique directoral voice.
  • Be able to collaborate with dramaturgs, playwrights and designers.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lead groups of artists in collaboration.
  • Previous directing and assistant directing experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Education

Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Professional Training Company is focused on practical, experiential training designed to help young theatre professional’s transition from an academic degree to a real-world career. While completion of a four year degree is preferred, professional work experience in theatre or related fields may meet apprenticeship requirements. Successful candidates enter into the apprenticeship already having acquired basic training and experience in the field and are looking for immersive career development opportunities. Due to the nature of the Directing Apprenticeship, at least one year of experience beyond an undergraduate degree or equivalent training is strongly preferred.

Compensation

A grant of $5,000 is awarded to each full-season apprentice to help defray the cost of living.  We also provide each apprentice with help finding low-cost housing and securing student loan deferral for the season. Apprentices are responsible for all costs associated with living in Louisville for the duration of the apprenticeship.
