New Voices: Playwriting in
the Schools

Foundation and

New
Voices is a classroom residency for middle and high school students
aimed at teaching the basics of playwriting. Students work with teaching
artists for 8-10 sessions to create original 10-minute plays with an
emphasis on writing rather than production. These original works focus
on a wide array of subjects affecting teens, including bullying, body
image, substance abuse, and often reflect their own experiences. New
Voices serves hundreds of students annually, and has given rise to the
Actors Theatre New Voices 10-Minute Play Contest, in conjunction with
the Humana Festival of New American Plays.
Fee: $800 (aid available)

Actors in the Classroom
Pre-show Workshop

young audience to the play.
Offered free as part of the Student Matinee Series package
The Education Department will contact teachers to setup workshop dates
and times best for their class after they reserve tickets for
a student matinee. Student

Peace by Piece
This exciting new program for youth centers and schools is a drama-based
approach to conflict resolution and peace education. Through an explorative
process of creative drama, improvisation and playwriting, young people
can better connect their inner life to outward action, leading to a
greater sense of wholeness and wellbeing. By responding creatively,
young people can imagine real-world implications of expressed ideas
of justice and compassion for themselves and the communities to which
they belong. Peace by Piece is a 10-16 hour classroom residency.
Fee: sliding scale
Design-Your-Own-Workshop
Teachers may choose from a variety of content areas to create custom classroom workshops specifically designed for the needs of their students. Each workshop involves interactive activities and discussion led by one of our teaching artists.
