Properties Apprentice


Summary of Position

Assist with the creation and acquisition of hand props, soft goods, furniture, specialty items and set dressing required for a full season of classic and brand-new productions. The Properties Apprentice will engage in a variety of creative and innovative assignments alongside a professional and talented team of carpenters, artisans, and props masters working at the top of their field. This apprentice will gain experience in all forms of props construction, management and design. Please note that while some design opportunities may exist as a part of the Professional Training Company, this is primarily a technical apprenticeship.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with all load-ins, set dressing calls, and strikes.
  • Help build necessary furniture, set dressing and hand prop pieces needed for a production.
  • Repair, modify and organize stock items needed for a production.
  • Research as needed or assigned.
  • Work in various capacities as a props master and/or props artisan on Professional Training Company productions as assigned.
  • As part of the Props Department team, work within the department to improve and organize stock and other facilities as assigned.
  • Attend weekly Props Department meetings as called by the Properties Director.

Primary Learning Goals

  • Gain professional skills and experience will crafts, painting, soft goods, carpentry, computer graphics, casting/ molding, and electronics.
  • Explore real-world problem solving approaches and learn to make decisions based on finances, efficiency, materials, staffing, and other immobile parameters.
  • Learn how to be a part of a professional team working together toward mutually shared goals.

Qualifications

  • All applicants should have some background in theatrical properties in an academic, professional, or community theatre environment, be comfortable in high places, and have an ability to lift 35 lbs.
  • Successful candidates will also have:
    • A passion and excitedment for theatrical properties
    • An open willingness to learn
    • The ability to articulate their current career trajectory and how this apprenticeship is right for them.
    • An abiity to perform independently and be self-motivated.

Education

Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Professional Training Company is focused on practical, experiential training designed to help young theatre professional’s transition from an academic degree to a real-world career. While completion of a four year degree is preferred, professional work experience in theatre or related fields may meet apprenticeship requirements. Successful candidates enter into the apprenticeship already having acquired basic training and experience in the field and are looking for immersive career development opportunities.

Compensation

A grant of $5,000 is awarded to each full-season apprentice to help defray the cost of living.  We also provide each apprentice with help finding low-cost housing and securing student loan deferral for the season. Apprentices are responsible for all costs associated with living in Louisville for the duration of the apprenticeship. It is possible for the Properties Apprentice to obtain part-time employment outside the apprenticeship. Additional employment must be approved by their supervisor in advance.
