Run Time: 1 hour and 20 minutes
book by Todd Almond
music and lyrics by Matthew Sweet

Nebraska, the 1990s. Two teenage boys—one a social outcast, the other the quintessential jock—explore a relationship during a summer of self-discovery between high school graduation and the rest of their lives. Set to irresistible songs from Matthew Sweet’s landmark pop album of the same name, this rock musical gives voice to those of us who grew up in small towns, those of us who didn’t quite fit in and learned we were somehow different, and anybody who remembers the terror and thrill of first love.
Recommended for High school and up (Grade 9)

“ATL’s production of the musical Girlfriend grabbed my heart, filled it with nostalgia and forced me to recall memories I have often brushed off because they are emotionally powerful. Yet the show also made me smile, and laugh, be thankful for being in love, and just like the Mike and Will of the story, be happy and grateful as I slowly walk into the sunset, holding the hand of the man I love.”- Carlos-Manuel, Arts-Louisville.com Full Review
“This story spoke to me, and it moved me, and it made me feel alive”- Brian Walker, Theatre-Louisville.com Full Review
“The singing didn’t feel like the “let’s break into song” of most musicals and almost all “jukebox musicals”…Instead it felt like two guys hanging around belting out songs from their favorite mix tape. Kind of perfect in that way.”- Melissa Chipman, InsiderLouisville.com Full Review
