by Sarah Ruhl
directed by Laura Gordon

Ruhl’s Tony-nominated play is an exploration of love, longing and science in a time of invention and discovery.  In a 19th century home, a doctor’s new treatment for “hysteria” is capturing everyone’s attention, including that of his wife.  As she overhears his patients’ sessions in the next room, they awaken feelings of her own—but can Mrs. Givings break through the wall between minds and hearts, husbands and wives?  This thought-provoking, funny and touching play about marriage and intimacy is sure to be the buzz of the city!

What the critics are saying about IN THE NEXT ROOM (OR THE vIBRATOR PLAY):

“With the spot-on aesthetic elements in place, the strong cast under the direction of Laura Gordon fantastically realizes Ruhl’s script. Witty, well paced and full of hysterical (no pun intended) double-entendres”
LEO.

In the Next Room succeeds because Ruhl embraces both the absurdity and underlying tragedy of life and offers in the end some hope, yet to be realized, that we may learn to embrace our freedom with a sense of restraint and maturity that might allow each of us to live a more full and balanced life in community.”-arts-louisville.com.Full Review

“The entire show is peppered with jaw-dropping action, and side-splitting double entendres that fill the theatre. There was such a high volume of laughter that most people left with sore cheeks. The innocence to the language and sexual discovery make this play not raunchy, but a naïve depiction of what society was like before it became over-sexualized.” – Gabrielle Fuller, WHAS11News.
