Sound Apprentice


Summary of Position

The Sound Apprentice will learn a variety of skills working alongside a team of sound technicians and designers on each of our 14+ season’s shows. The ideal candidate will have a background in theatrical or event sound production or design, with a desire to grow a deeper understanding of professional practice. Please note that while some design opportunities will exist as a part of the Professional Training Company, this is primarily a technical apprenticeship.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in daily Sound Department duties including:
    • Load-ins, work calls, system tuning, level set, and strikes.
    • Equipment maintenance and repair.
    • Paperwork updates
    • Special Projects
  • As part of the Sound Department team, maintain the organization and cleanliness of all control booths and FOH mix positions.
  • Serve as a Sound Board Operator for productions as assigned.
  • Work in various capacities as a sound designer and technician on Professional Training Company productions.
  • Attend weekly Sound Staff Meetings as called by the Sound Supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned.

Primary Learning Goals

  • Understand the possible audio careers available in the professional theatre (Sound Supervisor, Sound Technician, Audio Engineer, Sound Designer, etc.).
  • Develop a professional-level skill set and standards for production sound work, including the development of knowledge on Yamaha digital consoles, QLab, and current audio technology.
  • Explore real-world problem solving approaches and learn to make decisions based on finances, efficiency, materials, staffing, and other immobile parameters.
  • Learn how to be a part of a professional team working together toward mutually shared goals.

Qualifications

  • All applicants should have some background in theatrical or event sound production in an academic, professional, or community theatre environment, be comfortable in high places, and have an ability to lift 35 lbs.
  • Successful candidates will also have:
    • A passion and excitement for theatrical sound.
    • An open willingness to learn.
    • The ability to articulate their current career trajectory and how this apprenticeship is right for them.
    • An ability to perform independently and be self-motivated.

Education

Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Professional Training Company is focused on practical, experiential training designed to help young theatre professional’s transition from an academic degree to a real-world career. While completion of a four year degree is preferred, professional work experience in theatre or related fields may meet apprenticeship requirements. Successful candidates enter into the apprenticeship already having acquired basic training and experience in the field and are looking for immersive career development opportunities.

Compensation

A grant of $5,000 is awarded to each full-season apprentice to help defray the cost of living.  We also provide each apprentice with help finding low-cost housing and securing student loan deferral for the season. Apprentices are responsible for all costs associated with living in Louisville for the duration of the apprenticeship. It is possible for the Sound Apprentice to obtain part-time employment outside the apprenticeship. Additional employment must be approved by their supervisor in advance.
