We caught up with Hannah Karpenko as part of our Worker Crush Wednesday (#WCW) series to find out more about what she does and her experience acting onstage in Dracula.

Worker Crush Wednesday: Hannah Karpenko

Each year, Actors Theatre’s Apprentice/Intern Company program provides its members an opportunity to spend nine months at one of the nation’s most exciting regional theatres. Hannah Karpenko graduated from Nazareth College with a B.F.A. in musical theatre and is one of 20 acting apprentices participating in the program this season. She is currently appearing as ‘Mina’ in Fifth Third Bank’s Dracula.

Tell us about your role in Dracula?

The handful of apprentices are there to really influence the atmosphere. When I play Mina, the opening chase scene with the monster really sets the stage for the whole rest of the show in terms of the overall feel and what you can expect.

What have you learned while being a part of this production?

It’s a very physically demanding part. We have to do a lot of conditioning to take care of our bodies and voices. What I have learned was really how to take care of myself and take charge of what I needed and still give fully to the production.

What has been your favorite part of working on the production so far?

I think my favorite part of the production is all of the technical elements. It has been so cool to see how these elements really elevate the show to the next level. It’s been a blast in rehearsal and it’s been wonderful to be a part of this tradition. It is a great initiation to the Actors Theatre family.

Has there been a memorable moment during the student matinee shows?

When I get thrown over the top of the coffin, I get to reach out into the audience for the first time. I remember during one performance that there were a bunch of girls in the front row. When I reached out to them, I saw the looks on their faces and saw that they didn’t want any part of it (laughs).

From pop culture to famous novels, who is your favorite vampire?

I’m a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. I have watched the series all the way through seven times, so I think I’d have to go with Spike. He’s just my favorite!
