Acea Baker was born in Louisville, KY in 1993. My parents taught, and modeled, that my brother and I could achieve anything we set our minds to with hard work, focus, and some sacrifice. As a younger kid, I never questioned my identity because it was my norm: my parents were an interracial couple, and my closest childhood friends had parents in interracial relationships. The question of where I fit in entered my mind once I got into middle school, and lingered until I reached college and worked through that. Now, as an adult, I feel that being a mixed-race person does influence how I move through life, but I no longer question my value or wonder “do I fit in?” However, I do still notice when I’m one of the only people in a room that look like me.
